How To Reduce Heating Bills & Heat Loss

Reduce heat lossThere are important reasons to reduce energy consumption in our buildings. With heating costs rising all the time the sooner you fit secondary glazing, the sooner you will start benefiting. In terms of energy saving, windows are the prime area in which heat loss can be prevented. The UK has made a commitment to reduce carbon emissions. Buildings account for 44% of the total and are therefore a key target. Energy Performance Certificates will define a building's Energy Rating and become a factor in the valuation of your property. Our secondary glazing can have ordinary Float or Toughened glass specified, or for even better thermal performance - Pilkington 'K' low e glass. By adding the extra pane of glass in addition to your existing windows - draughts and heat loss are dramatically reduced. For extreme circumstances we have a heavy duty system that can take a double glazed unit.

How To Reduce Noise

Secondary Glazing for noise reductionNoise from traffic, local air ports and the general noise from inner city areas or main roads can be a real disruption to the quality of your living or working environment. The best way to reduce noise is to fit our secondary glazing and specify either Laminated glass or Acoustic glass. These types of glass are thicker and heavier than ordinary glass. For extreme circumstances we have a heavy duty system that can take a double glazed unit.

Air Gap - Simple Yet Effective

A simple yet further improvement to reducing both heat loss and noise is to fit the frame to allow around a 100mm air gap between the Secondary Glazing and the existing windows. We have a deeper SF3 and SF4 subframe specifically for the purpose of Reveal fixing the Secondary Glazing in this way.

Is Secondary Glazing Just For The Winter Months?

No - most of our secondary glazing will accept flyscreen (insert panels or integral panels) for use in the summer to let in the fresh air and keep out the mosquitoes- giving you year round benefits.

What Does It Look Like?

Usually they are white, although optionally we can paint them any one of 200 colours. They are made from durable aluminium so they will not rot and require very little maintenance. As aluminium is a strong material the frames can be made slim so that it is less obtrusive. They come with covering trims so you don't see any of your fixing screws and the units are often pre-drilled for easier installation. Also, our secondary glazing can be curved to form arched secondary glazing windows.

Secondary Glazing

Where Is It Used?

  • Busy areas where traffic noise is a nuisance - even when double glazing is already fitted.
  • Listed properties and properties within conservation areas are ideal where you are unable to modify the old existing external windows.
  • As a cost effective alternative to replacing your existing single glazed windows.
  • Leasehold properties where changing the existing windows may be uneconomical.
  • Any window that needs noise reduction and/or draught reduction.

How To Choose - Overview of Durations Aluminium Secondary Glazing

There are two considerations when choosing your secondary glazing:

Firstly - you need to look at the existing window and note how it opens and see if there are bars going vertically or horizontally through the window. If you have a sash window that slides up and down then the sash window will have a horizontal bar half way down the window. In this instance our vertical sliding secondary glazing can be made to match these windows - with the horizontal bar in the same place as that on the existing window. With the bars on both the existing and secondary windows aligned - the secondary glazing blends in with the existing window.

We have horizontally sliding units, vertical sliding units, lift out units, side hinged units and fixed units - so that we can match any existing window.

We offer a comprehensive range of Secondary Glazing styles for almost any situation.

Secondly - you will need to decide which of the three Secondary Glazing systems you require. Bearing in mind the fact that, certain styles are unavailable in some of our Secondary Glazing systems (for example: Our Tilt Back Vertical Slider is only available with our Luxury Subframe system). The three systems available are our Economy Odd Leg system, our Luxury Subframe system and our Heavy Duty system.

Economy Odd Leg System
Luxury Subframe System
Heavy Duty Double Glazed System

We offer a three different Secondary Glazing systems.

The Economy system is at a lower cost than our Luxury Subframe system. This secondary glazing system is perfect for large commercial buildings, where it's lower cost can make a significant difference to your pocket. The Economy system has an odd leg flange that allows you to quickly and easily face fix the unit to the existing windows.

The Luxury Subframe system has a wooden sub-frame around the outside of the aluminium frame. The wooden subframe is easy to mount, comes with trims to cover your fixing screws and leaves you with a clean and tidy finish. You can face fix this Secondary Glazing system to your existing windows or mount it a small distance away from the window - attaching it to the "reveal". Subframe is generally most suited to residential fitment where a neat finish is very important.

The Heavy Duty system is designed to take double glazed sealed units. This makes it the ultimate Secondary Glazing system for noise reduction and heat insulation. This system is most suited to extreme situations where using Acoustic glass or Pilkington 'K' thermal glass and a 100mm air gap is not enough to reduce the noise and or heat loss to an acceptable level.
